We are Symbols

That's why astrology works (and Quora, and horses)

I wrote a bit about symbols here.

One thing I left out — because I had never thought about it before — is that if what makes astrology be informative is the symbolic properties of everything, including the visible sky, it works because… we’re symbols.

It might seem stupid, but bear with me.

If my chart is a group of symbols, and if a symbol is what I have described in the text linked above, it shows, well, symbolic structures.

If it does, it can only say those kinds of things about me.

This is a more technical explanation of why the chart cannot tell you if you’re born rich, if you’re American or Senegalese, or exactly how many children you’re going to have (although it might tell if you’re fertile or sterile).

Moreover — and I say this as a reminder for future thinking, I’m definitely not sure — a natal chart coul be “translated” as “this here (the judgment concerning, I don’t know, relationshipss) describes what kind of symbol you are as a lover/husband/wife/whatever.”

A big more old astrology answers from my Quora profile.

What was your experience like with an astrologer?

I have never ever consulted with an astrologer. I have met several different good astrologers (some of them helped me a lot along my career), though.

I risk being rude, but: it does not matter.

Sun signs are a very vague generalization of the symbolism of the Sun in the 12 signs, it`s not proper astrology.

Moreover, the natal — birth — chart is a matrix of symbols, is not part of you, or something that sends forces to you. So, you dont have to “identify yourself” with any of them. The entire chart symbolizes your possibilities and impossibilities.

I hope I helped.

First, a few clarifications:

  1. The “astrological sign” (the Sun sign) means precious little;

  2. The sky does not influence nor have impact on our lives. It shows, it symbolizes aspects of our lives.

Now:

No, it makes no difference whether your birth was natural, a c-section, or if the birth was induced. You were born exactly where and when you were supposed to be born, and the chart always matches you.

In the sense that these two terms have nowadays, neither.

They show.

What they show, however, is the essential nature of things; and this nature compels our “animal part”. But we have, at least potentially, the ability to refrain it (it’s called “free will”).

You can’t. Uranus is almost always invisible.

And, with a cloudy weather, even if it was visible now and where you live, you wouldn’t be able to spot it.

How do I identify myself? Am I a Taurus or an Aries? I have Sun in Taurus 0°26, Moon, Mercury, and Venus in Aries, and my rising sign is Virgo.

It doesn’t matter much, because sunsigns are not really of much importance to real astrology, but if your Sun is in 0º Taurus, you’re a Taurus. There are no “sign cusps” or fuzzy areas between signs.

That’s the problem with consulting with many different people. If they all give the same answer, why consulting more that one? If they give different answers, which one we should choose?

What I would do is to research them, and trust the one with the best record — most accurate predictions, less wrong ones.

Marcos, and what about the horse races?

Well, I lost the last one.

And, to be true, I still don’t get it. OK, Black Rose showed but… it was the favorite. I cannot see anything marsy in neither Lovely Grey nor Nickel Saver. I want to check this chart with more care. Yes, it’s an empirical method, it doesn’t have to work all the time, but it seems weird.

So, I’m not spending anymore lillycoin this week — I have a Congress to attend this weekend, I have lots of things to do before that, and won’t be able to look at it.

(Probably. If I manage to do it, I’ll let you know).

That’s it for now. Thanks for reading.

PS. Here’s my Buy me a Coffee, if you like what I write and want, well, to buy me a coffee.
